What is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training is like physical first aid but for mental health. Participants learn practical skills to recognise and help someone facing a mental health problem or crisis until professional help is available.


Individuals who complete Mental Health First Aid training are known as MHFAiders. Equipped with the skills to listen, connect, and offer support when it matters most. MHFAiders are essential in reducing stigma, offering support, and guiding individuals towards mental health support in various settings including workplaces, communities, schools, and tertiary institutions.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses are developed by Mental Health First Aid Australia who have provided evidence-based training to help people support those with mental health issues and connect them to professional care and resources since 2001.

Full Course: Standard MHFA (adults supporting adults)

Full Course: Workplace MHFA

Refresher Course: Standard MHFA

Refresher: Workplace

How is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) delivered?

The 12-hour course can be delivered in 1 of 3 ways:

Face-to-face: 2 x 6-hour sessions over 2 days
Blended Face-to-Face: Self-paced eLearning (5-7 hours), followed by a 4-hour face-to-face session
Blended Online: Self-paced eLearning (5-7 hours), followed by 2 x 2.5-hour videoconferencing sessions

All sessions are led by an MHFA trained and Licensed Instructor.

Are there different Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Courses?

Yes, there are supporting adult courses, young people courses, workplace courses, industry-specific courses, and aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander courses. see here
