Can psychologists prescribe medications?

No, psychologists cannot prescribe medications in Australia. 

Only medical doctors, such as Psychiatrists, General Practitioners (GPs), Paediatricians and Specialists, are authorised to prescribe medications. 

Common psychopharmacology medications include

  • Antidepressants 

  • Anxiolytics 

  • Antipsychotics 

  • Stimulants 

  • Mood stabilisers 

  • Sleep medications 

It's crucial to note that only qualified healthcare professionals can prescribe these medications, and they should be taken or ceased under their guidance and supervision.

Psychologists do not have prescribing rights in Australia. Psychologists focus on cognitive, emotional, lifestyle, relationship,  behavioural and other therapies however, note medication management. 

Sometimes a medical doctor may refer a patient to a psychologist for testing, review or assessment. In most cases, psychologists have training and competency in psychometric testing to support psychological recommendations and analysis. Psychologists’ feedback and reporting may be used by medical doctors to opine the best medication treatment plan for patients.
